Are Gates Timing Belts Good?

Yes. And I'm not saying that to win points with a brand. Gates builds original equipment timing belts for automakers and industrial engine manufacturers—which means their belts have to pass OEM durability testing, not just "fit the engine."

I used to substitute cheaper belts to save $15–20 per job. In 2021, a budget timing belt on a customer's 1.8L began shedding material into the timing cover at around 45,000 miles. The Gates belt I'd installed on a similar engine two years earlier showed no visible wear at the same mileage. Same shop, same tech, same tensioning procedure. The difference was internal construction.

People assume the Gates price premium is marketing. The causation actually runs the other way: Gates has to build belts that survive automaker warranty cycles, so the engineering cost is already in the product. You pay more up front, but the alternative has an invisible price—labor, downtime, and a customer's tow bill.

One caveat: buy the right series for the application. Gates makes belts for different service classes, and not every belt in the catalog is the right tier for a high-load drive.

Do Gates Harley Drive Belts Hold Up?

Gates builds the original equipment drive belts for many Harley-Davidson models. When you buy a Gates replacement, you're essentially getting the same belt from the same factory, in different packaging.

The mistake I made—and I see it repeated constantly—is ordering by length rather than part number. In 2022, I ordered a drive belt for a Softail based on tape-measure readings. The belt had the right length and the wrong tooth pitch. $220 went down the drain, a week of downtime followed, and the bike owner was very patient with me.

Read the part number stamped on the old belt before removing it. If it's unreadable, cross-reference the Harley part number for the exact model year. Gates publishes cross-reference charts for this. Or rather, Gates has them available through their catalog and distributor portals.

I should add: verify the model year even if you just bought the bike. Harley used different drive specs on identical frames across different years—and that's how a lot of replacement parts go wrong.

Will a Zoro V-Belt Pulley Work With My Gates Belt?

It can—but "V-belt" isn't a single spec. You need to match the belt section (A, B, C, 3V, 5V, etc.), confirm the pulley's pitch diameter, and check that the bore and keyway match your shaft.

I bought a Zoro pulley a few years back because the price looked right for the Gates belt I was pairing it with. What I didn't check was the bore size. $38 pulley, $15 shipping, then a week lost while a machinist opened the bore from 1/2" to 5/8". The pulley was fine. My pre-check process wasn't.

Zoro lists dimensional specs on the product pages, and their cross-reference charts are useful. The question is whether people actually read them. The pitch diameter matters for belt matching—not the outside diameter of the pulley and not what the product picture looks like.

What Is a "Louie V Belt"?

Honestly, I'm not sure. I've searched it, asked people on the plant floor, asked my Gates rep. Nobody has been able to point me to a product called a "Louie V belt" that comes from Gates.

My best guess—and it is a guess—is that you're looking at a private-label or re-branded belt from a marketplace listing. Those belts often carry serial-style markings that don't cross-reference to anything public. The belt itself might be fine; the label just doesn't tell you what spec it is.

If I remember correctly, we run into a mystery brand like this once or twice a year in our own warehouse. The workaround: read the markings printed on the belt itself. A V-belt will typically show a section letter and a length, like A-42 or 3V-560. If the markings are worn off, measure the top width, height, and outside length, then compare them to the Gates V-belt size chart. Whatever name is on the box, the belt has to fit one of the standard cross-sections.

What Size VFD Do I Need for a 5HP Motor?

Short answer: a 5HP VFD is usually enough—but size it by full-load amperage, not by the horsepower number. A typical 5HP, 460V, three-phase motor draws 7.6A at full load, per NEC Table 430.250. A 5HP VFD rated to output at least that much current handles most applications cleanly.

The trap shows up with high-inertia loads, inclined conveyors, or anything that needs a long ramp-up. The drive current-limits during acceleration and faults out. It presents as an intermittent overcurrent trip at the same point in the ramp every time. I want to say I've seen that misdiagnosed as a motor problem at least twice, but don't quote me on the exact number.

If you're running a 1.15 service-factor motor near full load, or you're above roughly 3,300 feet altitude (VFDs derate up there), step up to a 7.5HP drive. It's cheaper than a week of intermittent faults and the electrical labor spent chasing them.

This was accurate as of my last project in late 2024. VFD vendors update their ratings frequently, so verify the output current against the motor nameplate before ordering.

What Do the Numbers on a Gates Belt Mean?

It depends on the series. A 3V-560 is a 3V-section belt with 56.0 inches of effective length. A 5L850 is a fractional-horsepower belt with 85.0 inches of outside length. Many metric automotive belts print the length in millimeters right on the casing. The common thread is that the number is a length spec—but the base can be effective, outside, or pitch length depending on the belt series.

That's exactly where I got burned early on. I assumed a B-section belt marked "B-51" had a 51-inch outside circumference. It doesn't necessarily. The effective length and the outside measurement are different numbers. The belt I ordered based on that assumption came back wrong.

The lesson is simple: don't interpret a belt number's length system yourself. Look it up in the Gates catalog or cross-reference tool. If the marking isn't in the book, call a distributor with the printed markings in front of you. It costs five minutes and saves a week.

What's the Biggest Mistake You See With Gates Belts?

It's not the brand choice. It's the measurement. People replace a worn V-belt by wrapping a tape measure around the outside and ordering from that number. But Gates size charts specify pitch length or effective length—not outside length—and a worn belt has stretched.
