Gates-Belts Buying Checklist: Timing Belt Kits, Harley Drive Belts, and Micro-V Belts

A cost-focused checklist for choosing Gates belts, timing belt kits, Harley drive belts, Micro-V belts, and drive chain—plus what a stepper motor is and when it matters.

If you're about to order a belt drive replacement and have a 'Gates belts' tab open, this checklist is for you. I'm a procurement manager at a 40-person industrial service company. Step 1: Verify the exact profile, not the top width

A 5L belt and a B-section belt can look almost the same on a worn sample. They are not interchangeable. Last year, a supplier quoted a 'B50' for a blower we service, and the mechanic installed a 5L50 because it measured close. It slipped, got hot, and ruined an idler bearing before anyone noticed.

Check the old belt's printed number first. If the number is gone, measure the top width, height, and angle. Then use a cross-reference tool—the one on gates.com is the one I use. Step 2: Read the suffix letters carefully

The difference between an A-section belt and an AX-section belt is the notched/cogged construction. The difference between a standard V-belt and other profile families can affect heat, speed, and horsepower rating. Suffix letters are not optional.

I've paid for that mistake. We ordered AX belts because the old part number was worn, and the machine ran rough. It wasn't a manufacturing defect; it was the wrong belt construction. That order cost us reorder freight plus about four hours of downtime.

Step 3: Decide whether a timing belt kit makes sense before you quote it

A timing belt kit normally includes the belt, tensioner, and sometimes an idler pulley. On many modern engines, the tensioner is not a 'while you're in there' upsell. It's a second labor charge if you skip it. Most buyers focus on the price difference between the belt and the kit and miss the labor risk. The question everyone asks is 'belt-only or kit?' The question they should ask is 'what does the service manual require?'

In 2024, we priced a timing belt kit for a service van. Belt-only was $140; the kit was $230. Labor for the same job was $700. The $90 difference looked like upside until I asked how much the second tear-down would cost if the tensioner failed. The answer is why the shop policy now says: quote the kit, then remove it only if the manual allows.

To be fair, there are engines where a separate healthy tensioner is fine. The old rule 'replace the belt, reuse the tensioner' comes from a simpler era. That rule doesn't hold for many 2020-plus engines.

Step 4: Choose drive chain by pitch and series, not by 'overall length'

Drive chain causes more returns than any belt we order. People ask for a '#40 chain, 100 links' and then get surprised about roller width, pin type, or working load. Pitch, roller width, and series are separate numbers.

Count the links, confirm the pitch, and note the connector style—clip master link vs. riveted link. The connector affects installation tools and, in some cases, safety. This is the step most people skip, and the one most likely to produce a second order.

Step 5: For Gates Harley drive belts, measure tooth pitch and width

Gates Harley drive belts are a common OE-grade replacement for Harley-Davidson motorcycles. But 'Harley belt' is not one size. Length, width, and tooth pitch vary by model and year. If you're maintaining a small fleet, write the part number on the service card before the bike leaves the shop. That one habit saves us a lot of 'which bike was that again?' time.

Step 6: Answer the Micro-V question with rib count and effective length

'Are Gates Micro-V belts good?' The short answer: yes, in most applications, if you pick the right one. Gates Micro-V belts are consistent and work well on accessory drives. But a good belt with the wrong number is still a bad order.

You need the rib count, the effective length, and the series. A 6PK2260 is not the same as a 6PK2280 or a 5PK2260. If the old belt has a readable number, use it. If not, measure the outside length and count the ribs before calling anyone.

Two Costs That Never Appear on the Quote

In my cost tracking spreadsheet, there's a line for 'second visit.' It's bigger than most buyers expect.

The first cost is downtime. When a belt stops a production line, the real cost is not the invoice; it's the missed shipment and the crew standing around. The second cost is double labor. If you swap a timing belt and reuse a tensioner that fails two months later, the second labor charge is a lot more than the tensioner would have been.

What's a Stepper Motor? (And Why It Doesn't Replace a Belt)

It's controlled by a driver that sends pulses to the motor windings. You'll find them in 3D printers, CNC tables, and positioning stages.

A stepper motor is not an alternative to a drive belt. It's a different kind of motion control. If you need precise positioning, you might use a stepper with a belt pulley or a leadscrew. If you need to transmit torque from a motor to another shaft, you still need a belt or a chain. So a stepper motor is the thing that might be driving the belt, not the thing that replaces it.

Mistakes That Cost Us Money

  • 'Same size' does not mean same rating. I assumed two B50 belts were equal because the numbers matched. One was a fractional-horsepower belt; the other was a wrapped heavy-duty belt. The cheap one slipped under load and caused a $1,200 redo.
  • The old belt is a template. Lay it flat, measure it, and mark the rotation direction before throwing it away. If the old belt has a directional arrow and the new belt doesn't, stop and check.
  • Question 'OEM equivalent' on third-party listings. Per FTC advertising guidance (ftc.gov), claims like that need substantiation. The best substantiation is a matching part number. If a seller can't give you the base number, don't guess.

Bottom Line

This checklist is about avoiding the second purchase order. Choose the profile, read the suffix, count ribs, confirm pitch and length, include the tensioner when the manual says to, and write the part number down.

This process works for us, but we're a 40-person service shop with predictable machine usage. If you're a hobbyist working on one vehicle, you can probably make a simpler call.
